It’s that time of year again, no I’m not talking about Christmas, I’m talking about K-Pop Star. I know it’s been a while since season 4 started, but with the Top 10 decided a few nights ago I figured it’s time to talk about it.
***Warning: There will be spoilers***
How do you feel about the season so far?
I feel great about it. It was a little slow but it’s picking up a little. This is definitely a girl season. I’m 95% sure that a girl is going to win. I mean look at the Top 10, there’s only one guy (I know there’s John Chu but he’s part of a duo with a girl so he doesn’t really count for me). As far as talent goes, I think we had a better pool of it this year than last year, especially when it comes to consistency. A lot of my favorites last year didn’t even make it to Top 18, while this year they did. Anyways, I’m just really excited for the live broadcasts!
Now onto my Top 10 performances (in no particular order):
1. Ji Jon “Baby Baby”
The more you listen to their version of the song, you love it more and more. This was the first performance for the duo and the judges praised them on their teamwork and arrangement of the song. I’m in love with John Chu’s piano skills and Jang Mi Ji’s guitar skills (I’m even more in love with their silky voices harmonizing and all that good stuff).
2. Sparkling Girls “Crazy in Love”
Their back story makes this performance even better. During the selection of groups, nobody picked these wonderful, talented girls. So they did the best thing they could ever do, they formed a group on their own and they freakin’ slayed. I’m not kidding when I say that I can’t wait to see where they’ll go after K-Pop Star.
3. A/S “Bad Girl Good Girl”
Na Soo Hyun and Lily M, both from Australia, make the cutest duo covering this Miss A song. The little rhythm break they have around 2:06 is super good. Unfortunately, Na Soo Hyun was eliminated in later rounds, while Lily M made it to the Top 10. Congrats!
4. Miss Korea (Esther Kim, Katie Kim, and Grace Shin) “잊었니”
QUEENS. I am so freakin’ in love with Katie Kim’s voice and Esther Kim’s emotions. I’m warming up to Grace, slowly.
5. Esther Kim “I’m Not the Only One”
Holy sh*t. Her deep voice, lower register (I don’t know what to call it) doe. Not only is this a great song to begin with, but Esther’s emotions really shows in her version. And this is why she made it to Top 10.
6. Jung Seung Hwan “사랑에 빠지고 싶다”
Now everyone close your eyes and just listen to his voice. You don’t even have to understand Korean to get them feels. The feels man, the feels. I love him. Can I just marry him? Or, I don’t know, sing to me every night? That’s doable right? And it’s not creepy, he he he. Of course, he makes it to the Top 10, being one of two guys.
7. Jung Seung Hwan + Park Yoon Ha “슬픔 속에 그댈 지워야만 해”
This performance is all about Park Yoon Ha. Jung Seung Hwan was great, like really great. But Park Yoon Ha’s voice completed the whole performance. Her voice is so clean and pure, it kind of reminds me of of S2’s Shin Ji Hoon. Their back story for this song is cute too. In order to capture the emotion for this song, they held hands all the time up to the point where they entered the stage. Once they got on stage, they let go of each others hands and sang like no other. So good, so good.
8. Lee Jin Ah “Nyam Nyam Nyam”
That was so hard to type in English for some reason. She has the most unique voice, I think, since the beginning of K-Pop Star. This song is super catchy, once you hear, Nyam, nyam, nyam, nyam, nyam, you can’t stop.
9. Sam Nam Mae “Umbrella”
Spoiler: they didn’t make Top 10. But I personally think that this was really good. It’s probably one of my favorite covers of this song, like ever. It just makes me wonder why they didn’t air this. It was that good.
10. Ji Yoo Min “갑”
Show me the Money 4. Like now.
Well that’s it for my Top 10. Let me know what some of your favorite performances are or performances that made you go “wtf?”.
